Fall 2011 Leader to Leader Free Articles

The Fall 2011 issue of Leader to Leader, Leader to Leader Institute’s award-winning journal, was recently published and three timely and insightful are available for free online.

Frances Hesselbein’s ‘ In the Presence of Remarkable Leaders’ recounts her experiences as the Class of ’51 Chair for the Study of Leadership at West Point Academy, “the first woman and the first non-graduate to serve this role,” and other recent service work. The article closes with a farewell to Alan Shrader, Leader to Leader’s managing editor since 2002 and welcomes his successor, Bruce Rosenstein.

It's Time for the Heroes to Go Home by Deborah Frieze and Margaret Wheatley advises that “if we want to transform complex systems, we need to abandon our exclusive reliance on the leader-as-hero and invite in the leader-as-host… leaders-as-hosts see potential and skills in people that people themselves may not see.” The article recounts a model of “heroic leadership” evidenced in Columbus, Ohio’s homelessness response success and the journey leaders undertake from isolated heroes to effective hosts.

Razor Suleman and Bob Nelson’s ‘ Motivating the Millennials: Tapping into the Potential of the Youngest Generation’ is a timely frame of the Millennial generation’s attitudes and expectations in the workplace, helping leaders stay in tune with their younger workers. Advising “if you give younger employees a reason to get excited, they will and do show an extraordinary work ethic and passion to get the work done,” the authors outline the best way to develop and mold the next generation of leaders.

Issue 62 contains a total of 12 articles, written by experts in all three sectors and relating to all aspects of leadership. Subscribers receive the journal quarterly and new members of Leader to Leader Institute receive a complimentary subscription.
