What is your defining moment? Share your story with us.

“When I returned to Argentina, my main mission was to lose myself in its culture. I got used to wearing the national shoe: the alpargata, a soft, casual canvas shoe worn by almost everyone in the country.

Toward the end of my trip, I met an American woman in a café who was volunteering with a small group of people on a shoe drive – a new concept to me. She explained that many kids lacked shoes, even in relatively well-developed countries like Argentina, an absence that didn’t just complicate every aspect of their lives but also exposed them to a wide range of diseases. Yes, I knew in the back of my mind that poor children around the world often went barefoot, but now, for the first time, I saw the real effects of being shoeless: the blisters, the sores, the infections – all the result of the children not being able to protect their young feet from the ground.

I wanted to do something, but what?”

This is one of Blake Mycoskie’s most defining moments as a leader, as told in Start Something That Matters, the story behind the popular, socially-conscious company, TOMS Shoes. Mycoskie founded the for-profit company with an innovative twist: for every pair of shoes that TOMS sells, a pair of shoes is given to a child in need.

Leader to Leader Institute would like to invite you to submit a reflection on your own defining moment – the moment that you started on the path to becoming the leader you are today. Your defining moment can be anything; every leader’s journey is unique. With your submission, you will be entered to win a copy of TOMS founder Blake Mycoskie’s book Start Something That Matters. Both written and video responses are encouraged, so feel free to be creative in sharing!

To enter the giveaway, post your defining moment on our blog or facebook by December 2, 2011.

The defining moment for me was learning about Dr. Muhammad Yunus and the Grameen Bank. It completely blew my mind that business principles were being used to help millions of people out of poverty. Dr. Yunus has been a huge inspiration to me because he opened up my eyes to dreaming up solutions to social challenges. A couple years after I set course on my new direction, I was thrilled to not only meet him, but interview him on my talk show! We discuss how he started Grameen Bank, their successes and challenges, and a glimpse into their future plans. Here is a link to the interview: sic.conversationsnetwork.org/shows/detail4648.html

my defining moment came in the wilderness on a wildlife management area. i was there reading my Bible and praying. God showed me a future of ministry. It is still unfolding piece by piece. I am approaching a "deciding moment" in my life where more good things will be started.

This summer I got the chance to meet two of my most important mentors -- Frances Hesselbein and Debbe Kennedy in the States.Watching the two extraordinary leaders practicing their leadership philosophies in one-day was unforgettable experience. When they talked to you, they considered you as the most important person in that moment. They enjoyed serving you food at the lunch table and waited patiently until you finished. These were very small deeds -- and small deeds make up all the great acts, as Lao Tzu once said. I am grateful for having met Frances and Debbe, who helped define the kind of person I would like to become through years of learning and practice, that is to show focus and respect to others, to serve in my own way, to take the responsibility and most importantly, to start from where I can.

My defining moment is when I am aware of the choices in front of me at that particular moment in time. The moment when I'm given the chance to contribute something, to make a difference. I have always believed the great achievements do not happen by chance. It is always a "choice", a decision to be made and that every decision defines what you will be next. That is the most important thing for me, that is, to be aware of this choice, to be aware of the difference I can contribute and make. Maybe I am aware of making a difference because I believe that a great achievement is a decision of kindred souls with a common vision and common goal. This is where I get the strength to make a difference, my defining moment to serve people.

My defining moment was in January 2011. I was one of 75 students selected to attend the 21st International Youth Leadership Conference (IYLC) in Prague and was given the opportunity to interact with student leaders from more than 30 different countries. Five days filled with simulations of the UN Security Council and International Criminal Court, a visit to the Embassy of Pakistan and the opportunity to converse with his Excellency the Ambassador of Pakistan to the Czech Republic, among other things, fulfilled me with a deep sense of gratitude. I was so thankful for such eye-opening events.

Looking back at the conference, however, I realised that it wasn’t really the content which made the IYLC so special, no, it was the encounter with those incredible, like-minded human beings that made this week one of the best of my life (as cheesy as it may sound, it was!). I finally found people who were thinking along the same lines, who were passionate about international affairs, sustainable development and simply to create change. I realised that together we really can change our surroundings and that we should never accept the status quo.

Learning the time that were most defining for various leaders is a huge inspiration to me. From there, I can learn what sparked the personal growth of the people that inspires me the most. I like to listen to the stories of Warren Buffett or Bill Gates. Both of them do not exactly have a defining moment of their lives that made them the richest people on this planet, but they both have their own processes that molded them into the men that they are.
