"Mission Accomplished, Nonprofits Go Out of Business"

This article from last Friday’s New York Times "Mission Accomplished, Nonprofits Go Out of Business" was not an April Fool’s joke—many notable non-profit organizations are planning to close their doors in coming years because they have successfully accomplished what they set out to do.

Jan Masaoka, editor in chief of the Blue Avocado, another non-profit blog, is quoted saying “I do see that in some cases there is an opportunity for organizations to wind down gracefully and with their job done”. The article highlights multiple groups who have achieved their mission statements including Out2Play which is based here in New York City close to our Leader To Leader headquarters. Out2Play has successfully erected playgrounds all over New York City, equipped with Mayor Bloomberg’s administration’s personal support. Out2Play will be contentedly closing its doors in 2012 because it is almost out of usable sites to build playgrounds after building over 120 at grateful elementary schools city-wide.But New York City isn’t the only area experiencing success.

We hope you are as inspired by these successes as we are and that you remember that a big part of great leadership is taking pride in what you have accomplished before moving on to your next project.

Have you had a success lately? We would love to hear about it.
